Are you ready to sell products or services online?  In order to have an on-line ordering system or eCommerce store, your web site must be published on a secure server and have a shopping cart.  In addition, your customers must be able to specify everything about your product at the time the order is placed (color, size, etc.).  Then, your company must be able to fulfill these orders.  Some things to consider before adding a shopping cart:
  • Does your company check email on a regular basis (1-2 times per day minimum)?  This is essential due to the fact that companies are notified via email when an order is placed.
  • Does your company have software that can send automatic responses to email orders and help track the status of the orders placed?
  • Will you be able to ship the order within 24 – 48 hours of receiving the email?
  • Does your company have an on-line merchant account for processing credit cards?  This is usually a different number from a normal merchant account.
  • Does your company have the ability to recover if an order is placed fraudulently?  This means that the on-line order was placed using stolen credit card information and you will not collect the money from the order even if you already shipped the products.
  • Does your company have an account set-up with a shipping company such as FedEx or UPS?
  • Do you have the supplies on hand to ship order promptly?
  • Do you have the shipping rates of the company you want to use?
  • Are you charging shipping to your customers? If so, how do you plan to calculate how much to charge – by weight or by invoice?
